Grain producers sought for project to baseline soil carbon

South Australian grain producers are being encouraged to apply to undertake soil sampling to measure carbon as part of a Grain Producers SA (GPSA) project with renowned soil analyst, FarmLab.

Through GPSA’s role in the $1.8 million Soil Carbon Innovation Challenge project, up to 15 grain producers are being sought to undertake soil sampling post-harvest.

GPSA Chief Executive Officer Brad Perry said it a fantastic opportunity for South Australian grain producers interested in their soil carbon to get involved in this project.

“GPSA is proud to be a partner in this project funded by the Federal Government’s National Soil Carbon Innovation Challenge aimed at reducing the cost of accurately baselining a farm’s soil carbon levels,” he said.

“With international markets and key stakeholders in the supply chain demanding more and more accurate farm level data, this project can play an important role in quantifying that soil data.

“South Australian grain producers are being encouraged to apply to be involved in this exciting project.”

FarmLab will be taking soil samples at 18 locations to both a 0 to 30 centimetres and 30 to 60 centimetres’ depth. These samples will be split across two areas the grain producer wants to have baselined (each area can be 10 to 100 hectares). These 36 samples will be lab tested for Soil Organic Carbon, with the results shared with the grain producer.

The project will cover the costs of this soil sampling and lab testing, which would normally be in the thousands of dollars.
