GRDC Farmer Update Streaky Bay (26 July 2023)

Grain growers from across Eyre Peninsula will gather in Streaky Bay later this month to discover the latest grains research and development outcomes that offer the potential for positive impact on-farm.

Among the guest speakers will be Sarah Day from SARDI who will provide insight into tackling the key challenges when growing lentils on calcareous soils. Sarah explores the agronomic fundamentals of lentil agronomy and key considerations for nitrogen fixation.

Brian Dzoma (SARDI) will provide an update on the nutritional challenges of calcareous soils. Brian provides amelioration strategies when managing phosphorous tie up, high pH and low fertility soils. 

With last years season being front of mind for growers Sara Blake (SARDI) provides an update on pulse diseases. Sara’s presentation will provide a showcase of the varietal options on the horizon and key strategies when effectively managing pulse diseases. 

Snails are proving to be a persistent challenge for the region. Kym Perry’s (SARDI) presentation provides key strategies and where to next when controlling snails. 

Last year’s late harvest and this year’s early break may have you wondering what’s in store for this season? Dane Thomas from SARDI Climate Applications explains how this year’s seasonal forecast can impact upon decision making.
