| South Australian primary producers are enjoying one of their strongest seasons in years, with above average autumn and winter rainfall.
To help our farmers achieve the strongest possible result, the South Australian Government is taking action to prepare for a locust outbreak that is a real possibility over the coming spring and summer months.
As part of this program, eligible landholders in designated areas of South Australia are able to access financial support through the Australian Plague Locust Chemical Rebate 2026.
The Australian plague locust is a declared pest in South Australia and can cause significant damage to crops and pastures. Under the Plant Health Act 2009, landholders are responsible for managing locusts on their property.
To help landholders meet these obligations, the South Australian Government is providing a rebate for approved chemical products used to control Australian plague locust infestations.
Rebate available
Eligible applicants may claim reimbursement for approved locust control products used between 1 September and 31 December 2026 in eligible areas.
Rebate amount: Up to $35 per hectare sprayed (excluding GST) for approved product costs, including delivery.
The rebate is paid on a reimbursement basis following the purchase and application of eligible products and submission of expenditure evidence through the myPIRSA portal.
Who may be eligible?
The rebate is available to eligible landowners, sharefarmers and lessees of primary production properties in designated areas of South Australia.
Eligible areas include parts of the Riverland and Mallee, Mid North and Eyre Peninsula regions. Visit pir.sa.gov.au/locusts for full eligibility criteria, eligible area details and rebate conditions.

Locust activity has increased across parts of South Australia, with favourable seasonal conditions creating the potential for populations to increase during spring and summer. Early control can help reduce impacts on individual properties, neighbouring farms and agricultural production across the region.
