The Lower EP Young Farmer Group have once again kicked off their learning journey for 2026.

Commencing in September 2025, the group of 15 young farmers commenced with a workshop and field visit, exploring a range of topics relevant to local farming systems.

Delivered by George Pedler Ag, participants visited local NVT trials, learning how to read and understand trial results. Toured a local soil pit with hands on practice to test pH and clay dispersion. And covered land management practices, soil management and machinery in conversation throughout the day.

The use of tile drainage as a water management technique was observed in a paddock, as well as in crop discussion and observation of beans and lentils sown together (and the effectiveness of that system), as well as other ways of thinking "outside the box" in terms of crop rotations.

In the first week of March, the group participated in their third session with farm business consultant, Ed Hunt. Ed stepped participants through profit drivers of farming businesses, then headed into the field to look at soil amelioration work, discussing new ideas for saline soils.

The fourth and final session will be held post-seeding.
