Pasture Case Studies | Building drought resilience from the ground up

| Posted in

Farmers across SA have trialed best-practice techniques in pasture management to help tackle dry conditions head-on — exploring how mixed species pasture systems establish and adapt in various landscapes for the long term.

Five case studies and a podcast recording are now available for livestock producers if they are looking to make improvements to their existing pasture systems, or seeking alternative options.

In conjunction with farming systems groups, landscape boards and research experts in pastures and livestock, the consortium project titled Promoting best-practice feedbase management to deliver improved drought resilience in low to medium rainfall regions through on-farm demonstrations and case studies”aimed to demonstrate the application of best practice pasture management options to deliver enhanced drought resilience by,

1) Extending the pasture growing season

2) Increasing the ground cover of pastures to protect soils

3) Improving livestock productivity

Upper EP farmers Hayden Schubert, Jamie Pearson and Leon Veitch participated with additional sites in the Mallee (Lowbank Ag Bureau) and Mid-north SA (Barossa Improved Grazing Group) included to demonstrate establishment of pasture systems across multiple regions.
