Undecided on the best break crop? | EOI Now Open

| Posted in

Following on from the 2024 SA Drought Hub funded project 'Building resilience - Break Crop Suitability Across Landscapes', AIR EP are again seeking expressions of interest from EP farmers that have identified a break crop paddock in 2025, but either not set on the best sowing option or seeking an opportunity to test new break crop options.

Preference is to have at least two break crop types in the same paddock (e.g. faba bean vs lentil, canola vs lentil), with either the paddock split in half, or with at least 3 seeder widths of one crop type to be sown.

What do we need from you for the break crop trial?

  • A site that’s easily accessible for monitoring,
  • Yield mapping capabilities,
  • Ability for you to sow, manage and harvest the paddock in 2025.

What we can provide to you:

  • Classing and zoning the soil types across the paddock,
  • Soil testing at the start and end of the season (so we need what the different break crops are providing for the following season),
  • Crop emergence and in crop monitoring,
  • NDVI (data farming) and biomass cuts,
  • Interpretation of yield maps,
  • Stubble residue assessment

In January 2026, a report will be compiled including results on soil types (yield maps, NDVI, Crop establishment), economic analysis and potential benefits for the following cropping year.

If you are interested in participating, please contact Rebekah Peters - projectofficer@airep.com.au or 0447 973 489.

Project activity is subject to final funding approval with the SA Drought Hub.
