Managing Soil Acidity on Lower Eyre Peninsula through Development and Delivery of Best Practice Management Growing Productivity and Sustainability
Summary
The ‘Managing Soil Acidity on Lower Eyre Peninsla through Development and Delivery of Best Practice Management Crowing Productivity and Sustainability project includes the development of an innovative pH mapping program for the Lower Eyre Peninsula and investigating the most effective treatment of low pH soils in this area to improve productivity and sustainability. This project also includes the development of best practice management guidelines that will include case studies and an economic analysis, which will further extend this information across the region and state.
The project will build on work already being undertaken as part of a LEADA, Eyre Peninsula NRM Board and Department for Water, Environment and Natural Resources (DEWNR) project to better understand the identification of acidic soils through a pH mapping program and the most effective treatment for these soils, to improve productivity and sustainability.
Learnings from the above project will be used to develop and further refine and demonstrate the best practice approach to the pH mapping machine and appropriate treatment options. This information will be used to produce best practice management guidelines that will include case studies with economic analysis of its cost effectiveness and broad extension of information across the region, State and nationally.
The project will achieve this by undertaking the following activities, including:
- Select 25 farmer sites (1,000ha total) for demonstration of pH mapping and acid soil management;
- pH map (utilising PIRSA in kind pH mapping machine) all sites and provide maps for each farm business;
- production of case studies and economic analysis;
- demonstration of best practice and extension of information through social media, workshops and field days; and
- publication of best practice guidelines
